Midsummer, Tobago
Broad sun-stoned beaches.
White heat.
A green river.
A bridge,
scorched yellow palms
from the summer-sleeping house
drowsing through August.
Days I have held,
days I have lost,
days that outgrow, like daughters,
my harbouring arms.
Poem by Derek Walcott (1930-2017), winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, 1992. The Nobel committee described the work of the St Lucian writer as ‘a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment’.
